The guiding philosophy of the Islamic University of Science and Technology
is to be a garden for dialogue. The University strives to create an environment
of learning where students can develop, cultivate and support
an academic culture that values interdisciplinary learning and inculcates
social awareness at multiple levels, from local to regional and global.
The Islamic University of Science and Technology offers opportunities for higher
learning to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and neighbouring regions. We
aim to:
give our students an appreciation of the wonder and beauty that exists in the
diverse and plural world we live in.
seek knowledge in the pursuit of a ‘complete education’, with a clear focus on
job markets and career-orientation.
In keeping with our vision for interdisciplinary learning, the Islamic
University’s strong Science and Technology orientation is complemented by the
diverse and innovative introduction of Humanities and Social Sciences into the
curriculum. Every student enrolled in a degree program is required to take up
to 20% of courses in the Humanities in order to be awarded a degree. We firmly
believe that significant awareness of the Humanities will help graduates to better
understand social trends and human aspirations within the work place. It
will also encourage them to appreciate diversity amongst people and contribute
towards positive change. To drive these objectives, the Islamic University
has instituted three Centres dedicated to the Humanities and Social Sciences.
They include:
CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES
IBN KHALDUN CENTRE FOR COMPARATIVE CIVILIZATIONS
RINCHEN SHAH CENTRE FOR WEST HIMALAYAN CULTURES
These Centres are mandated to impart a core curriculum in the Humanities
to all full-time students, to offer degree programmes and to promote advanced
research for scholars. By integrating Humanities into our core purpose,
we aim to provide a well balanced academic environment for both students
(who are seeking a career) and scholars (who are looking to further their understanding
of people and the world). Our focus on career development and overall
personality enhancement is a concrete step towards providing a more complete
education for leadership.
